Team17’s official launch notes confirm that proximity-chat voices can become distorted and robotic, that this was resolved in Squad and Leadership chats but can still occur in proximity chat while they work with their VOIP partner, and that Hotfix 1 resolved the periodic PlayStation 5 audio cut-out. Match your exact symptom to the documented issue before changing drivers, keybinds or console settings.

Match your symptom first

“VOIP not working” covers several different official issues with different statuses. Robotic or distorted nearby voices are the documented proximity-chat distortion. A completely silent channel points to bindings, permissions or channel selection, which the push-to-talk setup guide covers. Audio cutting out entirely on PlayStation 5 was the Hotfix 1 item. Identifying which symptom you have prevents wasting time on the wrong fix.

Official VOIP issues and their current status

The official pre-launch Top 5 announcement lists the audio and VOIP issues the team was already working on.

  • Proximity chat voices can become distorted and robotic. Team17’s developer thread attributes the distorted voice to EOS. This has been resolved in Squad and Leadership chats, can still occur in proximity chat, and the team says they are working with their VOIP partner on an upcoming patch.
  • Audio channels repeatedly cutting out was reported during a large-scale stress test; it has only been seen on PlayStation 5 Pro on a small number of occasions and is being investigated.
  • While traveling through a tunnel, players may not be able to see who is speaking in any VOIP channel, including themselves.
  • Players inside a unit will not be heard in proximity chat by other players if their Squad Leader leaves the unit.

Mouse-button VOIP binds on PC

Official launch notes say VOIP channels may not work when bound to mouse buttons. If your push-to-talk key is a mouse button and nobody hears you, rebind the channel to a keyboard key as a reversible test before touching drivers or reinstalling anything.

What Hotfix 1 changed for audio

The August 16 developer update says Hotfix 1 is live now on all platforms and lists: Resolved an issue that could cause audio to cut out for a period of time on PlayStation 5. That covers the periodic PS5 cut-out; it is not a claim that every VOIP symptom, including the proximity distortion still being worked on with the VOIP partner, is fixed.

When to contact official support

If your symptom does not match a documented issue, Team17 directs players to the Hell Let Loose Help Centre and the tech-solutions channel on the official Discord. Report platform, build, the exact VOIP channel, whether other players hear you or you hear them, and whether it happens inside tunnels or only in the open. One clear reproduction report is more useful than several vague ones.

Frequently asked questions

Why do nearby players sound robotic?

The official launch notes acknowledge distorted, robotic proximity-chat voices, which Team17’s developer thread attributes to EOS. The distortion was resolved in Squad and Leadership chats and the team says they are working with their VOIP partner to fix it in proximity chat.

Did Hotfix 1 fix PS5 audio cutting out?

Team17 says Hotfix 1 resolved the issue that could cause audio to cut out for a period of time on PlayStation 5. The separate PS5 Pro stress-test audio issue is still being investigated.

Why can’t I see who is talking in a tunnel?

Official known issues say that while traveling through a tunnel, players may not be able to see who is speaking in any VOIP channel, including themselves.

My VOIP key is a mouse button and nobody hears me. What now?

Official notes list mouse-button VOIP binding problems at launch. Rebind the channel to a keyboard key and retest before changing anything else.
