Hotfix 1 is live now on all platforms and changes how available servers are refreshed, filtered and ranked. Before the hotfix, Team17 said a Community Server could already have reached capacity before the browser updated, while the error could incorrectly mention spaces reserved for VIP players. Update the game, refresh the list, choose a low-ping server with clear capacity and try another Community or Official Server if one target still rejects the join.

Why the VIP-reserved error appeared

The launch-day notice says some Community Servers had already reached capacity before the Server Browser could update, despite appearing to have spaces. It also says the displayed error might incorrectly suggest the remaining spaces were reserved for VIP players. That explanation is a capacity and refresh race, not proof that every server operator configured VIP slots incorrectly.

What Hotfix 1 changed

The August 16 developer thread says Hotfix 1 is live now on all platforms and lists three Server Browser Improvements. The launch-day filter was labeled Hide Full Servers; after the hotfix, full servers are hidden by default.

  • The Server Browser will now refresh automatically more frequently to better reflect currently available slots.
  • Full servers will now be hidden from the default server list. You can still find these servers by adjusting your Server Browser filters.
  • The Server Browser algorithm has been updated to prioritize low-ping servers with 80 or fewer players, helping players find servers with available space.

Safe join checklist

Use reversible checks before touching files, ports or router settings.

  • Restart after the update so the client is on the current Hotfix 1 build.
  • Wait for the automatic refresh and keep full servers hidden while looking for an open slot.
  • Prefer a low-ping server with visible capacity; the original launch notice recommended trying servers with 50 or less players.
  • If one Community Server returns a VIP or capacity error, try an Official Server or another Community Server with more room.
  • If every region and server fails, use the broader server-status checklist and record platform, region, build and exact error.

Status boundary

Hotfix 1 documents improvements, not a guarantee that every server-browser or join failure is fully fixed. A version mismatch, platform-service incident, regional outage or individual server problem can produce a different symptom and should not automatically be labeled as the launch-day VIP-message issue.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a server with free slots say they are reserved for VIP players?

The official launch notice says the server may already have reached capacity before the browser refreshed, and the displayed VIP-reserved message may be incorrect.

What changed in Hotfix 1?

The browser refreshes more often, hides full servers by default and prioritizes low-ping servers with 80 or fewer players.

Should I edit game files or router ports?

Not for this documented symptom. Start with the current build, browser refresh and another available server; use deeper network troubleshooting only when all servers consistently fail.
